As we drove to Oil Mill Lane my recollection of Sidmouth was that they were a big side and they certainly didn’t disappoint on that score with four very big players!
The early stages of the game were mainly played in a congested midfield area. Sidmouth’s tactics became apparent very early on which was to give the ball to one of their big players and let them try and barge their way through. This tactic nearly led to the first try of the game but for a superb tackle by Finley L who managed to dislodge the ball as their player was over the try line and about to score.
The boys then opened the scoring when Emre went on a good straight run and after good rucking the ball was quickly recycled and this led to a great run and finish by Ben. The boys then doubled their lead when Ben again went on a superb run and then managed to pass the ball to Jamie as he was being tackled and Jamie then finished well down the right touch line. Sidmouth then started to exert a lot of pressure and despite an excellent tackle by Ollie J and Rhys M driving one of their players back and causing a turnover, Sidmouth regained the ball and scored their first try with the last action of the first quarter.
Exeter Youth 10 – 5 Sidmouth
Good start by Sidmouth with the game all being played in our half and the pressure led to a try for them. The Sidmouth pressure continued but the boys were tackling superbly with Jamie, Charlie, Freddie and Rhys M all putting some big tackles in with the latter being injured in the process! The boys held firm and then scored a breakaway try when Charles went on a great run from within his own half.
Exeter Youth 15 – 10 Sidmouth
A Good start to this quarter and the pressure led to a try by Jamie. This was another tight and attritional quarter and there was more excellent defence and tackling by the boys. A fluent passing move by the boys spreading the width of the pitch didn’t result in a try but it was a fantastic demonstration of their ever improving handling skills. Sidmouth were again applying a lot of pressure and thought they’d scored but Ollie J had superbly managed to force their player into touch just as he was putting the ball down. However, just before the end of the quarter Sidmouth did score a try.
Exeter Youth 20 – Sidmouth 15
The opening 10 minutes of this quarter we’re dominated by Sidmouth and they scored three unanswered tries putting them in the lead for the first time in the match. The boys responded with a good try by Felix but still trailed by one try. Felix again went on a bullocking run where he knocked at least three of their players out of the way but unfortunately despite his best efforts it didn’t lead to an equalising try.
Although this was the boy’s first defeat of the season they played really well especially as Sidmouth didn’t rotate their big players.
Exeter Youth 25 – 30 Sidmouth
