U10’s Match report vs Withycombe (Away)

Team:

Josh Ham, Elliot Raud, Jack Scrivens, Oliver Tillen, Rudi Phillips, Daniel Horn, Archie Thornhill, Will McLeod (capt), Oliver Broom, Harrison Bicheno, Harrison Jelley, Ollie Hargreaves

The season began this morning for the U10s with a certain sense of foreboding… we knew there were loads of rule changes and also that the Withycombe side had been formidable opponents at the Devon Rfu tournament at the end of last season when we’d sneaked a borrow victory.

Today the boys were for the first time expected to ruck, maul and scrummage! We coaches had prepared the boys as best we could but weren’t sure whether the lads had taken it all on board… they clearly had….

Match 1

The game started on a soft but firm pitch which seemed enormous although it was only 5m wider than last season. The chiefs lad started the more confidently demonstrating they were prepared to get stuck in and clear the Withy lads and lass out of the way. This quickly lead to tries for Rudi, Harrison Jelley, and Ollie Hargreaves. HT 3-0 Chiefs

The second half started with Withycombe coming at the Exeter lads more determined, but with superb defence from the whole team Withycombe were quickly turned over and on the back foot. Some brilliant off loads saw no fewer than 4 different players touch the ball before we crossed for the first try of the second half… tries from Oliver Tillen, Harrison Bicheno, Ollie Hargreaves, and another 2 from Harrison Jelley finished off the Withycombe lads and lass. FT 9-0 Chiefs win

Match 2

Followed on from  a stern end of match dressing down by the Withycombe coach to his team. This clearly motivated Withys and they started the match more strongly pressing the Exeter team back towards our try line for one of the few times. Exeters defence was impenetrable and held firm, but bizarrely the referee awarded a try to Withys when they grounded 5m short of the line?! This did not deter our boys who went straight back up the other end from the restart to show some high quality off loads from Daniel and Rudi to put Harrison Bicheno away in the corner to make it all square at 1-1. Exeter weren’t done though and scored more well worked team tries through Ollie Hargreaves and Harrison Bicheno. HT 3-1 Chiefs

The second half started and Exeter asserted there dominance quickly with a couple of cracking turnovers from Archie Thornhill, Daniel Horn and Harrison Jelley. The ball was then carried well up the middle by Will, Jack Scrivens and Oliver Broom. This power saw more tries for Captain Will, Daniel, Harrison Bicheno and Rudi. FT 7-1 Chiefs win.

I am super proud of the boys and what they achieved today as a team. They were brilliant.

The coaching team supporting the boys today were all really chuffed with the effort and skills of the lads. Excited about the rest of the season. Finally a special mention to Alex Vosper, Gus and Archie for coming to support even though they couldn’t play 😁👍
