MATCH REPORTS – U12s v Crediton

Quarter 1

This was the Under 12’s first home game of the season and on an immaculately prepared pitch with reasonably straight lines the game began.  It was a great start as straight from the kick off the boys received the ball and went through a number of phases of play with some good passing and then a good run from Jamie took us well into their half. From the recycled ball there was more good passing leading to a good run and try by Charles.  Crediton then put the boys under some intense pressure in our own half but the boys held firm and then managed to turn the ball over and another good passing move led to Charles receiving the ball and he again showed the Crediton defence a clean pair of heels as he raced down the left hand touchline to score his and the teams second try.  The boys were now starting to exert a degree of dominance and Finley L scored an excellent solo try as he ran straight through the middle of the Crediton defence.  The fourth try came from a big tackle by Rhys M in midfield which stopped their player in his tracks and drove him backwards causing him to spill the ball which Charles was the first to react to.  The ball was quickly passed wide to Ollie P who did his now legendary dummy and then showed great strength to finish.  The fifth and final try of this quarter came when Crediton kicked the ball away which was well caught by James and a good straight run led to a good strong ruck by the boys and then Emre barged his way through showing great strength to finish.  This was an absolutely excellent and dominant display by the boys and Crediton just couldn’t live with our power, pace and passing skills.

Exeter Chiefs 25 – Crediton 0

Quarter 2

A poor start to this quarter as Crediton scored a try straight from the restart.  The following five minutes were a much tighter affair with the game being played in the middle of the pitch.  Crediton then scored their second try when despite some good tackling by Chiefs especially Charlie, a great passing move by Crediton across the width of the pitch saw them score in the corner.  The boys then responded with a superb solo try by Freddie.  Crediton kicked the ball away which Freddie brilliantly caught running back over his shoulder and once he got his bearings he ran half the pitch slicing through their defence.  Felix then scored our second try of the quarter when he showed great power and determination to break a number of tackles and score a great try.  Crediton then scored their third try of the quarter when their number 19 scored with an excellent solo effort although our boys will be disappointed with some missed tackles.

Quarter 3

The boys were back on it in this quarter and it began when Max finished an excellent passing move in the corner.  Freddie then got his second try of the match which was created by Jamie who did an exceptional tackle as he not only stopped their player but also turned him so that we gained possession and then Freddie did the rest.  The third try was created by another tremendous run by Charles which got us within five metres of their try line.  Crediton did well to turn the ball over but we regained possession and from the resulting ruck Ollie W did his now trademark pick and go and scored the try from short range.  There were a further two tries scored both by Charles and both were excellent direct runs.  The second of these is worthy of mention as it actually came from a Crediton scrum which Ollie W excellently took against the head (thanks here to my summariser Sam Willis for a great spot!).  This was another dominant quarter by the boys where Crediton struggled to threaten our try line.

Exeter Chiefs 60 – Crediton 15

Quarter 4

The fourth quarter began with a try to Crediton.  The boys responded well and Ollie J scored an excellent try weaving his way through their defence.  Ollie was again involved in the next try as he went on another mazy run that got us within five metres of their try line.  A good clear out by Rhys M gave us quick ball and Jamie finished with ease.  During this quarter mention must be made of a superb try saving tackle by Finley L.  To add a nice symmetry to the mornings work our final try was scored by Charles making it five for him and fifteen for the team.  The last play of the game saw Crediton cross the line for a consolation try.

This was another excellent all round team performance with some impressive individual displays.  Although Crediton were well beaten it should be said that they were very good at the breakdown and on a number of occasions turned the ball over.
