MATCH REPORTS – U12’s away to Newton Abbot

First Quarter

On a beautiful early autumn morning the U12’s season eventually began. The early exchanges involved a number of handling errors by both sides as the ball was very slippy but after a few minutes Jamie went on one of his brilliant mazy runs and scored a superb solo try. A good passing move saw us come up just short of their try line but from the subsequent play Jamie went over for both his and the teams second try.

It was an excellent quarter with the game played almost entirely in Newton Abbot’s half. There were a couple of good straight runs by Emre and Felix and good tackling and pressure caused a number of turnovers.

Newton Abbot 0 – Exeter Chiefs 10

Second Quarter

A Strong start by Newton Abbot resulted in a well deserved try for them. The early exchanges were again scrappy but the team grew into the quarter and again a great deal of time was spent in Newton Abbot’s half. There were some  big tackles in this quarter by Rhys, Shaw and Jamie, however the half ended with Newton Abbot scoring two late tries both caused by a number of missed tackles.

Newton Abbot 15 – Exeter Chiefs 10

Third Quarter

A great start to this quarter with Ollie J creating an early turnover and this immediately led to a try by Finley. Newton Abbot put us under some pressure and spent a lot of time in our half but some strong defence with excellent tackling and rucking/counter rucking meant that we didn’t concede a try. An excellent passing move by the boys should have resulted in a try but it broke down just short of the try line, however from the recycled ball Ollie Williams went over from short range to score his first try.

Fourth Quarter

Good start by us again and a great run by Jayden drew in their defence and quick ball was then spread wide and finished excellently by Shaw. From the restart there was a big tackle by Rhys followed by another one by Charles and Rhys.

Another good run by Jayden ended with him just short of the try line. An infringement by one of our boys meant that Newton Abbot restarted the game but great tackling meant that we turned the ball over behind their try line and Jamie touched down for his hat-trick.

The last play of the game saw a good run by Emre end near their try line and from the resulting play Josh went over for our seventh try.

Final Score – Newton Abbot 15 – Exeter Chiefs 35

Overall an excellent first match by the boys with some good passing rugby which was commented on by the referee. The Newton Abbot referee deserves a special mention as he was again excellent and very fair.
